3.3 Unifying forms

A free 25 minute video lesson from my new course: BUILDING BLOCKS. In this course I demonstrate my method for researching and sculpting realistic portraits from photographs (not from a sitting). I show you every step of my process in detail, enabling you research your own subject and apply my method.

Video transcript

In this lesson I use two pictures taken with the head very-turned towards the profile, to explain what I’m looking for when identifying the smaller shapes on the face. I share some of the questions that you need to ask yourself when observing your own reference images and sculpt. I also use my guitar string tools and a little water on brushes to start unifying the forms.

Please note: If you have never sculpted a portrait before, we strongly recommend you take Amelia’s first portrait sculpting course STRONG FOUNDATIONS, and preferably the USEFUL ANATOMY course too, before trying to sculpt a portrait with this method. Nothing covered in the existing courses will be repeated in this course. This is considered an advanced course, for people with some prior experience.
